Back in March of 2009, the Vermont Agency of AG (Agriculture) put out a report to give timeshare relief to the land with a rotational grazing model. The Agriview Newsletter, published semimonthly by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture profiled the Laplatte River Angus Farm.

On land that was once a farm to just a few head of cattle in 1971 there is now a fully fledged beef farm. Original owners Jim Kleptz and his son Mark Kleptz now run the farm with around 250 to 300 mainly Angus cattle.

The main reason for the farms’ growth is due to an inexpensive grazing cost by providing mutual benefits, the landowners get to enjoy not paying land maintenance fees and having cows fertilize the grounds with nutrients. The innovation comes from the nearly 600 acres that the cattle graze on. The grazing lands are leased or donated by neighbors. This innovation has caused the farm to grow significantly and the grazing land quality has improved.

The fields switch between grazing and haying which allows for year round productivity. To maintain such substantial results on the farm the grazing patterns go through a timeshare process that gives the land some relief when grazing has done its damage. According to the Vermont Agency of AG report that was sent out the rotation occurs based on grass, soil and cattle conditions.

Demand for locally raised grass-fed Vermont beef has increased substantially by 40 percent per year. Supply for local beef has grown by 20-30 percent in 2009.

Outreach coordinator for the pasture program at the UVM center for sustainable agriculture says, “Laplatte River Angus is a terrific example for us all to learn from.” Jenn Colby (Outreach Coordinator) also said that, “Jim and John Kleptz illustrate an excellent example of farming success, through their innovation, creativity, and good management”.

This form of timeshare relief to the grazing lands has done wonders for the Laplatte River Angus Farm. In 2007 the Kleptz farm won the Sustainable Farm of the Year Award from the Vermont Sustainable Agriculture Council. The Vermont Ag and entire Vermont economy will surely continue to grow because of these insightful innovations.
