Sensitive Stomach Dog Food
Choosing the best sensitive dog food can be a lengthy process, depending on factors such as the breed and age of the dog, and the reason for the upset stomach. Unfortunately, due to the sensitive nature of canine digestive systems, any of a number of reasons could cause stomach trouble.
As with any other ailment, taking your pet to the vet is always the first step, should the animal show signs of a continuously upset stomach. The vet will then be able to diagnose the cause of the upset stomach, either ruling out or identifying whether it is allergy related, or some other, more serious medical condition.
There are four common causes of an upset stomach in canines, the most common of which is a food intolerance or allergy. This can be very serious and it is vital that you identify the allergen (the substance your pet is allergic to) and remove it from the diet as soon as possible.
To try and remove the allergen from the diet, switch to a different brand of food. Once the bad reactions stop, the allergen is no longer present.
There are specially formulated dog foods for sensitive stomachs available. It is important to note that such commercially produced foods may not contain all the nutrients your dog requires. They are generally more expensive than regular commercial dog food and are made up of neutral ingredients and exclude the most common allergens.
Once you have identified the allergen, it will then be possible to totally eradicate it from your dog’s diet. One way to do this is to make the special food your pet requires yourself. This way, you are able to experiment with ingredients, and identify the specific substance to which your dog is allergic.
Foods such as anything made with white flour, raisins, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol can be eaten and enjoyed by humans, but are toxic to canines in large amounts. Thus, your dog eating the wrong foods could be a reason for your pet’s upset stomach.
A stomach or digestive system related condition such as colitis, IBS (irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as a spastic colon) or others that has not yet been diagnosed could be the third, more serious possible reason for your pet’s upset stomach.
An abrupt change in diet could be the final reason why your pet is suffering from an upset stomach. Changing the type or even the brand of wood you’re feeding your dog needs to be done gradually, giving the stomach a chance to adapt, due to the sensitive nature of canine digestion.
