5 Things You Should Be Doing For Your Dog

Dogs are lovable animals and if you treat them right then they are true friends you can always count on to cheer you up and give you love when you need it. Yet because we have taken them out of their natural habitat and domesticated them, then we have exposed them to dangers they are not used to, and taken away a lot of things in their natural lives that kept them healthy (like running after prey to stay fit). So it is up to us to make sure we look after them and keep them healthy and happy in return for the love they give us, below are 5 things you need to make sure you do for you dog:

Keep dangerous items out of reach: Just like a baby, then dogs do not know that something like bleach will harm them, so they might bite through the bottle and get it on themselves if you leave it somewhere they can reach it. The same goes for small items and sharp items, dogs will try to eat almost anything it seems, and if you leave lots of small things in a place they can easily reach them, then don’t be surprised if they go missing one day!

Regular grooming: Grooming your dog is not just about making them look good and smell good (although it does do that) it also allows you to bond with your dog and to help you look for health problems before they get worse. As you wash or brush your dog then you can look at their skin and make sure there are no rashes or wounds that need to be looked at. Or you might observe they whine as you brush a certain area, in which case they might have an infection or injury there that needs looking at before it can get worse. By spotting problems early then you can save your dog a lot of pain later, and save yourself a lot of unnecessary vet bills.

Look after their teeth: There is nothing more painful than a toothache, so you want to make sure your dog avoids that pain if they can, by helping them look after their teeth. You want to inspect their teeth regularly to make sure they look ok, and use special dog toothpaste and a finger brush to clean their teeth regularly too. You can also get special dog chews that are made to clean their teeth as they chew on them, you could get some of them for the times in-between when you brush.

Stop giving them scraps: Dogs will beg at the table as you eat unless you teach them not to, but unfortunately most of us are too weak to teach our dogs not to beg and instead we give in and hand over some food. Yet you could actually be poisoning your dog with that food, lots of foods which we eat are harmful to dogs, chocolate, coffee, garlic powder and lots more items can cause them serious harm if they consume enough of them (which with little dogs is not a lot!). So if you really love your dog then teach them not to beg at the table and to enjoy their own food, then grab some special dog-specific treats for when you want to spoil them a bit.

Regular exercise: Dogs need exercise, they are energetic animals and they need to get out and stretch their legs. If we don’t exercise then we put on weight and our health starts to suffer, the same goes for a dog, so make sure you take them out every day and let them run around for a bit. You don’t need to run with them, get yourself a ball or a stick to throw for them and they can run themselves silly while you sit down on a bench and relax!
