Leash Training Basics
Begin leash training dogs as early as possible. Puppies learn quicker than adult dogs. The first skill most puppies learn is how to walk on a leash.
All dogs should first be taught to wear a collar that is the right size. Dog collars cannot be too big as to fall off or too tight as to choke the dog.
A space the width of your thumb should be left between your dog’s neck and the collar. The first time your puppy wears the collar, it may rub and the puppy will try hard to get it off.
Your puppy will give up trying to remove the collar after several days and will begin to feel comfortable. Wait patiently for this to happen.
Choose a leash to hook on the collar to safely walk your puppy. The leash should be a long rope which helps you maintain control over your puppy.
Your puppy will try to run away when let outside for the first time. That is why it is important to train the puppy to walk on a leash straight away.
Teach your dog it can only go so far on the leash. This distance should be enough length that your puppy feels free to walk.
Ignore poor behavior from your puppy and don’t allow it to pull you. When they pull, stop walking until the behavior ceases.
Once stopped, make your puppy come to you and then start walking again. If puppy keeps pulling, stop and correct again.
The puppy will get frustrated by stopping and will stop pulling. After a while, the puppy will learn it cannot walk too far away from you while attached to the leash.
Repetition is the key to helping your puppy understand walking on a leash. Practice this exercise with your puppy at least five minutes at a time.
Adult dogs are trained with the same method as puppies. However, they can be more difficult to train and so it is best to start practicing with your dog as soon as your bring it home.
