Nordic Spitz (Norrbottenspets)

In the early 1600s, a spitz type breed was developed – the Norrbottenspets. In the country where it was developed, the breed is also known as Nordic Spitz and Pohjanpystykorva. The Swedish people have made this very old breed as their national dog. Because of its endurance and other admirable qualities, this breed was claimed both by Sweden and Finland. The dog is rather small but it has a well muscled compact body.

Close fitting soft and very thick fur covers the dog’s square shaped body. Beautiful white fur with red and brown markings protects the dog from extremely hot and cold temperatures. The luxuriously furred tail that curls loosely over the back is a one of the breeds attention-getting characteristics.

This dog breed was purposely developed to be an all around farm dog but it has evolved into an outstanding hunting dog as well. A Norrbottenspets is not really a large breed but the remarkable courage and cunning personality makes the dog an excellent hunter. Improving the innate hunting ability of this dog would be an easy matter because it possesses a high level of intelligence and noted to have the canine eagerness to please attitude .

A Norrbottenspets is both a sight and scent hunter unlike other breeds of hounds that are either scent or sight hunters. The dog does not resemble a fox but it has gained a foxy reputation because of its slyness when hunting. Immediately after the dog is released in the hunting area, it will start to flush out game. The dog uses rapid barking to corner the game and to cover up the sound of the approaching hunter.

This small dogs is noted for its big personality. The dog has an affectionate nature that makes it an ideal dog for older couples needing companionship and security. A Norrbottenspets dog forms a strong bond with its family because it is full of life, very energetic and has a playful personality as well. These characteristic traits allow the dog to participate in all the activities of the family.

The breed was in fact named as one the 10 top breeds acclaimed for their gentleness with children. This loving and kind dog would show a stable temperament even when faced with new situations. Unlike other breeds, a Norrbottenspets will not be aggressive or react negatively if harassed or teased by children . Being a fairly healthy breed, the dog will provide the family about 20 years of companionship.
