Puppies and dogs are inborn pack animals and most of their manners reflects that fact. The most significant thing to do when you get a new puppy is to set up your dominance. You are the “pack leader” and you must always make sure that your puppy knows that.

Puppies will spend a major quantity of time trying to figure out where they fit into the pecking order. They normally do this by trying to establish their own authority. At the start it may be valuable for your training to make the puppy come to you and wait for his food until you are ready to give it to him. You may want to train him to sit before you put the bowl of food down.

While touching and handling a dog provide strong signals to him about who is in charge. Your puppy may complain and wail or even act as if that you hurt him at the beginning when you handle him for important grooming rituals. If he does this you must totally pay no attention to him and persist on finishing. You must always follow through with what you start with a puppy because he will find out quickly when you really mean something and if you are wishy-washy he will get another mystifying signal.

When puppies are little they use their mouths to nip and bite at things. You must stop this behavior straight away by giving him a quick “No” and a tap if necessary. The leader of the pack never allows nipping and you are the leader of the pack.

Showing your puppy that you are the main leader is the most crucial thing you can do to have a well-behaved dog later on. Stay away from aggressive games like “tug’o'war” where he can show too much dominance. Reward his good behavior with praise and treats and disregard his bad behavior as you start in on the process of obedience training. Following these simple rules can help you train your puppy to be well-mannered and submissive.
