Be cautious of distractions during your training sessions. Your dog must learn to pay no heed to the distractions and comply with your commands. Give love and attention and rewards when his attention is only on you. As your training progresses you should go to more and more places where there are possible distractions so that he learns to put his attention where you want it to be.

Many dogs are extraordinarily intelligent and they are keen to learn. They can also be very responsive to the care and attention given to them by their trainers and caregivers. Therefore it is wise to have patience and train your dog with love rather than with force or yelling because he can easily end up afraid of you and all of your training will then be for naught. If you want a durable, happy and loving bond with your dog he must depend on you absolutely.

Pups can be easily distracted so it is up to the trainer to make the training entertaining and engaging. Try not to spend too much time training at the beginning and as soon as it stops being fun for the dog it is likely time to stop that session. Keeping the training motivating and fun is a key to long-term dog training success.

In order to keep your puppy’s attention you can do things that he appreciates but you must also reward him for small successes. Do not proffer a food reward every time, however, because intermittent reinforcement is actually much more successful than constant reinforcement because he never realizes when he will get the treat so he will keep doing the behavior on the hope that he will get the food reward. Also too many food treats can be bad for your puppy’s well being and weight. However, love and attention should be always given.

A goody does not inevitably have to be food. It can be a walk in the park, playing in the yard, riding in the car or even just a hug and pat on the head. Love and affection should not be withdrawn, as your dog will do just about anything for that alone. This is a great way to maintain your dog’s motivation to please you.
